Caroline & Kristina’s Brookside Backyard Wedding

Kansas City Wedding Photographer

Kristina and Caroline held their backyard Kansas City wedding at Caroline’s childhood home in Brookside. Planned by Paboreal Hospitality, this backyard shindig included so many thoughtful details to keep everyone comfy under the tent all night long. Vintage furniture created a cozy space for everyone to gather with blankets, heaters, and a beautiful spread of Filipino food to snack on.

Hosting Your Wedding at Home

I love backyard weddings because there is something so special about hosting at a place already so close to your family’s heart. There are a few things to take into consideration when hosting your wedding at home. Having a tent is a great way to ensure that you have a backup plan for weather. Since these two had an October wedding in Kansas City, the weather can sometimes be hard to predict. They kept heaters under the tent and on the dance floor to keep everyone warm, even when the temperature dropped after sunset. I love that Caroline got ready for her wedding upstairs in her childhood bedroom. There’s something so romantic about having your ceremony in the place where you grew up dreaming about one day having a wedding.

Celtic Handfasting Ceremony

As a nod to Caroline's Scottish heritage, these two did a traditional Celtic handfasting ceremony, an ancient ritual that dates back as far as 7000 B.C. ⁣The couple’s hands would be tied, traditionally in the presence of two witnesses and a priest, as a symbol of their engagement. For one year, this was considered a “temporary marriage” after which the couple would officially wed within the church. Thus came the name, "tying the knot."

Backyard weddings in Kansas City are the perfect way to make your guests feel at home - literally. There’s no place like mom and dad’s to share memories that will last a lifetime under the stars with your closest friends. I love the warm autumn colors that they chose for their floral decor, and the way that the details were accented by the autumn trees surrounding the tent. As a Kansas City Wedding Photographer, I never get tired of sharing these special memories in the places that my couples hold near and dear.
